Various Vegetarians
Eating no meat is only part of the story. The American Dietetic Association describes three different types of vegetarians. Vegetarians range from people who don't eat animals (including fish and chicken) to people who don't eat anything that comes from animals. Here's how they are grouped:
- Lacto-ovo vegetarians - eat dairy foods like yogurt, milk and cheese. They also eat eggs.
- Lacto vegetarians - eat dairy foods, but no eggs.
- Vegans (pronounced vee-gans) - eat no animal foods at all.
Vegans need to make sure they eat plant proteins - such as nuts, beans, and bean products like tofu - to make sure they have the right balance in their diet.
