Periods, Tampons, and TSS
Toxic shock syndrome (TSS) is a rare disease that can sometimes cause death. TSS related to menstruation occurs most often in young women aged 15 to 24. It usually happens with tampon use. Scientists think that certain bacteria (called staphylococcus aureus) release one or more poisons (toxins) into the blood. These bacteria commonly live in areas such as the nose, skin, or vagina and usually cause no harm at all. But sometimes, for some unknown reason, the bacteria can lead to serious infection during lengthy tampon use. The same bacteria can cause infection after a deep wound or surgery.
